5 Tips To Handle Conflict With Co-Workers

Experiencing conflict with co-workers is inevitable. But the way you handle it can make all the difference. Here are some handy tips for handling conflict with co-workers:

Peace is not the absence of conflict, it is the ability to handle conflict by peaceful means. - Ronald Reagan

  1. Keep it to yourself

The last thing you should do is go around the office spreading gossip about the conflict. It’s very unprofessional to drag innocent co-workers into your conflict with someone else. Some people need to talk about the things that are bothering them, but rather talk to a friend or family member not involved in your workplace.

  1. Address it as soon as possible

Letting conflict fester has never done anyone any good. The situation will only get more and more hostile when you try and ignore it. Rather take your co-worker aside and talk to them face-to-face where nobody else can hear you. Don’t attempt to resolve the issue via phone or email – it’s important to be able to see their body language and facial expressions while trying to sort it out.

  1. Try to find a compromise

Sometimes an issue doesn’t allow both parties to leave 100% satisfied. Often it would be necessary to compromise and find a solution that at least suits everybody half-way. Keep an open mind in order to get the conflict resolved. Truly listen to their point of view and try to understand where they’re coming from.

  1. Never lose your temper

It is completely unacceptable to lose your temper at the office. You will only get a reputation for being emotional and difficult to work with, and it will almost never go your way in the end. Stay calm, even when your co-worker loses their temper. If you need to, ask to continue the discussion after taking a break and calming yourself down.

  1. Know when to involve management

In most situations, you should be able to resolve conflict with a co-worker yourself. However, certain situations call for involving HR or management. Workplace harassment is one of those situations. Don’t keep quiet about this one – it is your right to be protected.
